Trace Alphin Appreciation Post —

The Wake Forest shotstopper was kept busy throughout the Spring Soccer Cup final last night, as a revitalized NC State gave the Deacon defense a lot to deal with.

Alphin said after the match, "Our performance was far from pretty, but it shows that we don't always need to play pretty to get results. It's something we've been getting better with over the past couple years."

As the old saying goes, winners find a way to win.

This spring hasn't necessarily been an easy one. Since the fall season, Bobby Muus has seen several players move on to the professional level like Roald Mitchell, Garrison Tubbs, Hosei Kijima, Jake Swallen, Jahlane Forbes and Camilo Ponce. There have also been transfers and injuries along the way as well.

In reflection upon the spring season, Alphin also told me, "It's incredible to see how far we have come in just a few short months. One thing I noticed more about this group was how well we absorb information from our coaching staff, and from one another. Guys stepped into new roles and we were able to pick up where we left off despite losing a lot of high impact players."

Facing a consensus pro-ready Hakim Karamoko, Alphin came up big on several occasions to keep Wake Forest in the game. He even prevented the young emerging star from converting his penalty in the shootout. The two will meet again very soon, but this time, as teammates. Trace Alphin will be joining him at Manhattan SC in USL League Two this summer along with Cooper Flax.

With Muus's takers having gone perfect from the spot, Wake Forest went on to win after another save was made by Alphin to deny the Wolfpack.
