Edinburgh was the birthplace of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and also the city where he met the legendary man he later referred to as the 'real' Sherlock Holmes.

There was far more to Sir Arthur #conandoyle than #sherlockholmes ... these are the real mountains that inspired his story The Lost World which itself inspired #JurassicPark 🦕🦖📚

Dr Joseph Bell, the 'real' #sherlockholmes was many things to many people: doctor, teacher, friend, and literary inspiration. Of the many wonderful things he did in his life, one was to be a leading light in the creation of a hospital for sick children in his native #Edinburgh
.
From Chapter Eight of 'Carter the Cabman'...
'Her clothes are old and dirty and the rain that flattens her hair has not been sent to cleanse or baptize her - just as he who stalks and kills her kind has not yet been baptized.'
From Chapter Four of 'Carter the Cabman'...
'Better, you might say, to turn a blind eye and in doing so at least deprive the culprit of the satisfaction of acclaim...but it is not so easy to look away from the bodies being carted off the streets or death notices of the defiled.'
Some of the illustrations from my upcoming book, 'Carter the Cabman', which tells the story of a night in the life of a hansom cab driver working in #London during the time of the #JackTheRipper murders. For info, go to https://t.co/9lhpZyd4IW or DM me. (Images by @multigrade )
Madame Caroline Prodgers was the terror of hansom cab drivers in #Victorian#London . Having memorized the published fares for particular journeys, she took multiple cab drivers to court for overcharging and, later, for refusing to pick her up as her reputation spread.
Hansom cab drivers in #London had set cost charts supposed to fix the price of every journey. Not all were as scrupulous though, and a desperate fare might hear the dreaded words: 'What will you give?'
From Chapter Four of 'Carter the Cabman'...
'The olden haunt of highwaymen and lowlifes, cutpurses turned cut-throats, the area is a no-go at night and generally avoided and is said to be plagued by the spirits of the dead restlessly searching for their stolen things.'
