RSIL convened a multi-stakeholder consultation in Karachi on the feasibility of introducing human rights due diligence regulations in Pakistan, bringing together representatives from government institutions, workers’ organisations, civil society, and the private sector. The consultation was held under the @EUPakistan-funded Huqooq-e-Pakistan II project, in collaboration with the @mohrpakistan and @UNDP_Pakistan.
The session focused on obtaining stakeholder feedback on our recommendations on voluntary human rights due diligence entry points, creating space for dialogue, exchange of perspectives, and discussions on key priorities and challenges related to the implementation of HRDD under the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights in Pakistan.
RSIL conducted a two-day capacity development training workshop in Karachi under the @EUPakistan -funded Huqooq-e-Pakistan II project, in collaboration with the @mohrpakistan and @UNDP_Pakistan.
The sessions combined lectures and interactive group exercises to strengthen participants’ understanding of the fundamentals of business and human rights frameworks, as well as key skills such as coordination, law and policy analysis and monitoring the implementation of the NAP-BHR.
I had a great conversation with @kashmala_14 on Climate Finance and how Pakistan can adopt innovative approaches to creating markets, financing facilities, and liability sharing mechanisms to deal with the climate challenge.

“Before this war, everything about Iran’s capabilities and America’s vulnerabilities existed in the realm of the hypothetical. Could Iran actually shut the Strait? Nobody knew. Would the global economy absorb the shock? Nobody knew. Could the regime survive a full decapitation strike? Nobody knew. Could the US sustain a bombing campaign without boots on the ground? Nobody knew. Could Mossad deliver the regime change it promised? Again, nobody knew.
Now, everyone knows.”

The Research Society of International Law commends the Government of Pakistan, the United States, and the Islamic Republic of Iran on reaching this ceasefire agreement. Pakistan demonstrated principled leadership when others in the region shied away from responsibility, and we hope its fruits are felt by every civilian affected by this conflict. We urge all parties to ensure this ceasefire holds and becomes permanent, denying spoilers any foothold.
Civilians and civilian objects have been deliberately targeted during this conflict in contravention of the laws of armed conflict. The sanctity of International Humanitarian Law, the UN Charter, and customary international law has been deeply eroded over the past several years, and the suffering that has followed is a direct consequence of that erosion. We call upon all nations involved and the international community as a whole to recommit to the principles underpinning the international rules-based order. International law is not optional. It is the only architecture we have to prevent such catastrophic suffering from recurring.
