Yesterday I met a patient, who had a quirky take on corruption. He said, "Corruption is not just greasing the palms of an individual, it's greasing the wheels of our economy. Without corruption our country will come to a standstill"

I was shocked and asked him why.

He said " Take a road project. If the contractor didn't have to pay the neta, he may lay a road that lasts longer. The workers in the project won't get jobs more frequently. It's the same with any govt project. Corruption allows the low skilled people to have a job without begging , upskilling or taking risk. It protects the status quo. It's what many people want. When people say they don't like corruption, what they mean is they don't like other people making money. They don't mind the kind of corruption where they are the ones making money. Nearly everyone who denigrates corruption is a hypocrite".

In all my life, I have never seen a man extolling the virtues of a vice, celebrating the moral inversion. My brain felt like a Pentium IV trying to process a zillion terabytes of data.

I quickly recovered and wrote a prescription. At that moment the nurse came in and urged that the next patient was getting restless.

As my quirky man walked out, I wondered who he voted for.

I am glad you put this out Farooq because it led to one of the greatest performances in Test history. This is a case study on how you convert adversity into match winning performances through great courage, outstanding leadership and self-belief. When you have that pride, you find new heights. When you seek joy in someone else's adversity, you remain small and petty. So think big, think class, you might just find a wonderful world. Hopefully ....
