Taylor Farms is one of North America’s largest fresh produce processors. It grows some produce itself, partners with hundreds of farms, then washes, cuts, packages, and distributes produce to grocery stores and restaurants across the country.

Taylor Farms reports harvesting more than 1.5 million pounds of lettuce every day.

That’s more than half a billion pounds of lettuce per year.

You think you’re choosing between Whole Foods, McDonalds, Walmart and Taco Bell.

But sometimes you’re really just choosing different customers of the same produce processor.

The problem isn’t just how food is grown (with more chemicals, less variety).

It’s also how food moves from the farms to your plate.

More and more of the food system has become centralized around a small number of processors and distributors. The same pattern exists for many foods (not just lettuce): pork, beef, poultry, eggs & more.

When processing becomes highly concentrated:
- Farmers have fewer places to sell their products.
- The system rewards producing more food, more uniformly, at the lowest possible cost.
- A single problem can ripple across the entire food system.

And by the time the food reaches your plate, there’s often little or no connection to the farmer, or the land where it was grown.

Today, all but 7 Republicans in the U.S. House voted to merge the defense, manufacturing and intelligence communities with that of a foreign nation by voting to pass the NDAA.

I support passing a bill to fund our military and make it stronger.

What I categorically oppose is intertwining our defense department and intelligence community with those of a foreign nation.

That is treason.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what the house voted to do today.

Republicans, who were given their own special amendments to support this initiative voted to sell out American interests.

I will never do that.

I will never trade favors for votes. And I will never sell out America for a political talking point.
