If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via @thediscourse study.
This isn’t just about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice.

@HillThalisAUP Have often thought about how you could turn many of Sydney’s terraces into multi-dwelling buildings as has been done with nearly all of London’s rows and rows and rows of townhouses. Hopefully done in Sydney with more care though so less noise, sound, heat insulation issues
The absurdity of business owners complaining about a local high street having terrible traffic and wanting more parking spaces as the way to fix it 🤯🤯 ignoring that most customers come on foot too. Bizarre.

With all the coverage of the #VoiceToParliament referendum, I can’t help but think of the results of the 1967 referendum on indigenous citizenship. Imagine being part of that 9% who though FN people shouldn’t be counted as Australian 🤯
Further: 25kV AC is new standard for urban networks. Length of trains reflects balance between long term forecast demand and actual cost of excavating stations. Wouldn’t expect any future metro lines in Sydney to be as long as 8 carriages.
Why would train sets on Sydney’s metro lines need to be interoperable? There’s not going to be a physical rail connection between any of them. https://t.co/l3kuO8E8wZ
@James_Taite@1000yearhouse Uneducated brutes was how the early Brutalist described the workers who would/ could build their structures, ie brutes.
Thus the raw formwork and simple forms.
Having worked doing concrete it isn't something that requires education. Certainly far less skill than stonecarving.
the obvious pro of C&C is that surface to platform distances are much shorter. the cons of C&C is that all roads along a route will be ripped up for however long it takes to relocate all services (water, sewer, electricity, comms, etc), then excavate 2+ storeys & deck over
obsessed that online discourse amongst transport nerds in north america has reached a point that @RM_Transit feels the need to make a youtube video defending the use of tunnel boring machines where they're appropriate https://t.co/IC80Gd8Dn0
further context: transport nerds (especially in north america) absolutely froth over cut-and-cover tunnelling for metros and subways (I think because NYC? idk). Basically deep level TBM tunnels are the devil????
Individual instances of multiple votes by individuals are a drop in the political ocean, especially compared to the impacts of gerrymandering and non-majority electees in FPTP systems. Unsurprising the two basket cases of western democracies (US/UK) both suffer from these rules
Conservative politicians in UK/US so often banging on about needing ID to prevent voter fraud (which is not an issue) but baulk at proposals to redistribute seat/district boundaries so that there’s true proportional representation or reform voting to allow for preferential voting
