The UK just closed English waters to industrial sandeel fishing – a vital move for our seabirds!

Sandeels are tiny forage fish that are fundamental to the diet of many sea animals. But they are also in high demand by the fishing industry.

These fish are not used for direct human consumption, but the majority end up as fishmeal to feed farm animals.

The closure of sandeel fisheries in the North Sea means that seabird populations have a chance to recuperate their declining populations again.

It also sets an example to the EU and other countries! Let’s follow the UK’s lead and encourage sustainable approaches to fishing that are in line with nature and marine life.
