When she takes the controls, the men in her crew fall silent. Because they know: this woman sees things they don’t.

Kateryna is Ukraine’s only female combat Mi-8 helicopter pilot. She has flown more than 30 combat missions and has been awarded the Order “For Courage” and the Silver Cross.

When she applied for flight training, she was told bluntly: “This isn’t a woman’s job. What are you doing here?” She proved them wrong. Determination and hard work can break any stereotype.

Kateryna remembers her first flight almost second by second — the moment when everything she had learned in theory suddenly became real. The emotions were impossible to describe, and that feeling is still with her every time she flies.

“From the sky, I can see how beautiful our Ukraine is. That is what I love most.”

Yes, fear is always there. But she refuses to let it control her. When she becomes afraid, she reminds herself who and what she is doing this for — and it becomes easier.

Kateryna considers everyone who chooses to remain, live and work in Ukraine courageous, especially those with families they worry about every day. In times like these, staying is a conscious choice. 🇺🇦
