We need a major structural review of UK science. A series of government decisions over the last decade (including but not limited to the Brexit referendum and the subsequent fall out) have undermined this vital foundation of our economy - that is unarguable. The problems have been exacerbated by the recent hasty and opaque decision making in UKRI. What links these things together for me is the lack of a coherent analysis of the impact of each small decision on the whole ecosystem, from Universities to industry. Example: It may look reasonable on paper to move money from astrophysics to AI. But is it sensible if that precipitates the closure of a number of physics departments? Do those closures damage our AI industry more than the redirection of funds enhances it? I have seen no evidence of a careful analysis of this and many other questions.

On the physics funding crisis in the UK - there are some issues of nuance, shall we say, in the attached article below.
The reason STFC had 'no choice' but to cut so many projects (Jodrell and many more) was NOT the government's spending review settlement. It was a deliberate choice by UKRI (as confirmed by a UKRI board member on X, you'll find it in my replies) to refocus spend away from STFC science and labs and towards other areas which, it asserts, will lead to more ‘impact’. UKRI have the power to do this. However, as the HoC Select committee pointed out, we have not been able to see a detailed record of the process, impact assessment or consultation that led to such a seismic shift in UK science policy. Who made the decision?

As @ChiOnwurah wrote in an open letter to UKRI / STFC in March: ‘What is clear is that, despite your assertions to the contrary in evidence to my committee and our counterparts in the House of Lords, widespread cuts have been proposed before adequate consultation with those affected was undertaken. This is wholly unacceptable and represents a failure for which DSIT, UKRI and STFC leadership must bear responsibility, and act urgently to address.’

@fightmnd: An Australian-based foundation, that funds research to find a cure for the dreaded Beast of a disease known as MND (Motor Neurone Disease)/ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

MND is a nasty, insidious neurological disorder kind of disease you wouldn't even wish on your worst enemy. Average life expectancy, from diagnosis, is around 27 months. Some last longer, some go very quickly. As the disease progresses, the neurones that control necessary muscle movement die. This results in not being able to move limbs, talk, swallow, and breath.
