Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s speech exposes that there was no constitutional breakdown, nor a grave emergency.

Bilawal says negotiations were succeeding, and even today, urged that the federal government to continue talks and find a “middle path”. If negotiations were possible then, and a middle ground remains possible even today, why was an elected provincial government dismantled in the name of an emergency? His speech destroys the purported justification for emergency and governor’s rule.

Article 234 requires that the provincial government cannot be carried on in accordance with the Constitution, and Article 232 requires a grave emergency beyond the provincial government’s control.

The people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa deserve better than to have their elected government treated as a political bargaining chip.

An 18-year-old girl, Maham, was allegedly tortured to death by her own family members in Lahore’s Sanda area.

Police say the victim was subjected to severe torture, including with pipes and iron rods, while initial investigations also revealed alleged burns caused by hot iron and a knife.
