Here are my five key takeaways for Bangladesh after the Trump-Modi Meeting:

1). India remains concerned enough about Bangladesh to have PM Modi raise the issue with President Trump, but not so concerned as to insist it be included in the joint statement.

2). Bangladesh does not figure much at all in the Trump Administration’s list of priorities. The U.S. will listen to India’s concerns, but these are already factored into policy as a given.

3). Bangladesh’s interim government had a good week on the international front with Bangladesh being a non-issue in Washington and the release of the UN report helping to shape global public opinion.

4). The chattering classes continue to place too much importance to the role of foreign actors in Bangladesh and undervalue Bangladeshi agency. The foreign hand is mainly a psychological construct.

5). This week’s events and the anxiety surrounding them will likely accelerate a decision on banning the Awami League and may also help the IG’s consensus committee reach a deal with stakeholders on reforms and elections.
