Some thoughts on slop:

I took a break from this site a few months ago because AI slopticles were frying my brain and it surprises me that genre is still alive and well

I guess the slopticle is truly X’s version of a tiktok video - the most potent format to one-shot human attention circuits

It’s also quite interesting to me that despite their massive leaps in ability, AI models still write in a very recognizable and annoying way

Either I’m in this microbubble where I’m fine tuning my brain’s Turing test circuits on each new LLM release’s outputs - or writing convincingly like human is very difficult

I suppose it’s the latter - it’s something about the way thoughts in your brain flow, draw on your experiences and produce your unique perspective + subtle imperfect tells in grammar, punctuation, style

I’ve wrestled a ton with models - skills, prmpts, examples - to get them to output human-sounding writing but it’s never amounted to anything satisfying - better than stock but still unmistakably AI

There’s a strong cultural aversion to slop developing - yes, even normies get it - and the evidence of that is the strong hate of AI-generated menus/ads

It’s not that the output is bad - nobody’s arguing we should go back to menus written in Word - and similarly slopticles are undeniably a good format for learning

It’s rather the effort imbalance - the thought that someone one-shotted this while commuting and it now demands 15 minutes of your precious human time - that thought is disgusting

It should also mean that we’re shifting culturally to valuing dull in-person experiences (touching grass) and scoring perceived effort higher than raw ability

It also means that if you want to stand out online, write your own damn tweets - that’s all it takes
