Here are my thoughts on the @Humane Ai Pin...
I have no idea if it will succeed, and I'm skeptical, but I have to applaud the effort of making something genuinely new; it takes a lot of courage and supremely talented folks. Every recent tech release has been iteration till this point, and I'm glad somebody stepped up and innovated.
Now the product: in a word, wow. It's evident that Humane got much of its talent from Apple - attention to detail, premium materials, and polished user experiences. This level of polish from a first generation product is really unheard of. I'm so excited to try out the gestures. It seems intuitive, and I love that closing your hand brings you home - how neat is that? My one concern is "no apps." It seems great, as I assume it's meant to limit distractions, but I'm worried about how that will be in practice.
People have been raising pretty valid concerns: Can this replace my smartphone? How is this better than a smartwatch? etc. - and I think these are questions we won't know the answer to until we can try the pin. My take is that in its current state, I don't see many people completely getting rid of a smartphone in their lives; however, I do see huge potential in a secondary device - a way to get information quickly on the go without having to be buried away in your phone. Being a device free of distractions is an exciting idea, and I'm excited to try it out as somebody trying to disconnect. The usage of Open AI's GPT 4, among other LLMs, is exciting, and some of the features they have implemented, like "catch me up" - a way to sift through your notifications and deliver what's most important, and "interpreter" - a feature that identifies the languages used in a conversation and translates back in your own voice, are interesting applications of AI.
Privacy is a huge concern when it comes to a device constantly listening and watching, and while there is still more to learn, I think Humane has done a superb job. I like that you can see every bit of data they have stored about you in the Center, the hardware-based encryption keys, and the status lights for the camera/microphone. I also applaud their initiative never to sell data or use it to train their models.
The price surprised me; I was expecting much closer to the $1000 mark - but we got it at $699, which seems incredibly fair to me. It has a mandatory $24 per month subscription that gives you unlimited data, which seems on the pricey side to me, but likely that's also paying for the LLM. I am disappointed that it looks like it's only launching in the US for now, and I hope my fellow tech lovers worldwide will soon be able to try it out.
The team is obviously immensely talented, and they have the credentials to match. Reading about their past work experiences at all sorts of companies was inspiring. I am so thankful to call some of the employees my friends, and I am so happy they can finally share what they've been up to.
So glad @samsheffer introduced me to this fascinating company.
The future is fun.
