βοΈ"It was amazing to see my play being performed in front of many people."
#ICYMI - you can now discover the final plays of the #37PlaysProject in our new digital folio β¨
Gorgeous NEW pics from the Artists Day @polkatheatre last month where we shared my new play for children, Baki - The part left owing. Based on a true story, it's an intergenerational / 'family' /9+ play #bigdreamsfestival
With humour (and rap), the play explores Bengali history and the challenges of relationships between men and what happens when an old man and a teenage boy stop to have a chat and manage to find a way through.
The audience reaction - tears and laughter in just the right measure - told me that making up the balance, the baki, is such a universal ache that affects us all - wherever we are and whatever our background.
The Polka audience came to see underrepresented artists expressing what they wished they'd seen on stage as children and what they want to see more of on stage today. I visited Polka as a child and with my own kids and so I feel a lot of love for that place!
It's been so interesting translating something for the ears and mind into something visual and with movement too - I have my lovely team to thank for diving into the text and pulling so much out!
a piece that explores what makes those relationships across generations so difficult and so special.
I first wrote Baki as an audioplay that toured exhibitions in Bangladesh and England for @tara_theatre's ambitious @thestageukawards nominated #artistsmakespace programme in '22.
@NickhanLDN playing Grandad and Michael Soukhan playing Grandson, directed by @tara_theatre associate Gavin Joseph.
What a wonderful team and audience of industry folk (and close friends and family!) We shared half an hour of this full length play fresh out of a short R & D -
Got to hear this brilliant brave play read by wonderful actors at the superb @TaraTheatre today, led by Gavin Joseph. Lovely people to share ideas with and munch biscuits! πππβ€οΈ
