They did a study on known abusers and meeting the critieria for clinically significant anxiety was far more common than meeting the criteria for NPD, which shouldn’t be too surprising, considering the same is true for the general population, but you MAY be surprised if you got your information about the psychology of abusers from social media accounts supposedly dedicated to that concept!

Not only that, but even among people with clinical personality disorders (which was, in fact, NOT the majority), but individuals with OCPD were over TWICE as likely to engage in what the researchers saw fit to quantify as specialist abuse than individuals with NPD. In the context of this study, “specialist” means that the abuser specifically targeted their intimate partner, but were not otherwise generally violent or criminal. This means that most narcissists who were implicated in interpersonal abuse (less than 10% of participants, INCLUDING those with/who were found to fit the criteria for comorbid conditions) were seemingly NOT master manipulators who nobody else would ever suspect, which is often what proponents of “narc abuse” rhetoric argue the exact opposite of in order to make the case that abuse done at the hands of someone with NPD is inherently more difficult for the victim.
