@gayfurryalt Don’t personally buy it but I’d be very happy with it, one of the ones I myself don’t expect to happen but would scream joyfully if it happened
In my opinion, it feels like there's no other route as satisfying as Rudy Knight for an engaged player.
Dess Knight, as a whole, is a byproduct of the Chapter 2 Era overspeculation deriving from limited information, as by that point, we were in the same room as "Kris Knight". When you consider the identity of the Knight, you have to consider what would be the most satisfying for a player who has played start-to-finish with attention to the details.
Rudy and Carol are the only two reasonable people to hold at this moment, and that's what makes Rudy Knight so satisfying. From Chapter 1 and 2, all we know is the ambiguous details-- Rudy is a sick monster who Kris seems to have not visited in some time. Rudy is courteous and loving towards Kris, has a strong connection to Noelle (by virtue of being her father), and, unlike Carol, is a figure easy to locate in every single chapter. If you're a casual player looking to play for the gameplay alone, you may miss him, but anyone with a taste for discovery will easily find him.
Come Chapter 3 + 4, and it isn't OBVIOUS, but the information is imprinted, and you can't miss it. The Knight has antlers, they are a horrifying creature which appears to have some form of power in the Light World (as evidenced by the Black Shard), yet by their grotesque figure, there's still some ambiguity to their nature. Vague sick imagery reflected through flavour text, descriptions of fatigue, and there becomes certain connections to a certain Holiday that makes it a less puzzling piece after all. It's not CONFIRMED, but it's more than evident enough to be the running theory.
Come Chapter 5, and the fandom was so brainwashed that Toby Fox had to do what he did with the entirety of Chapter 5 and course-correct with an extreme lack of ambiguity ("depends on which Holiday") that somehow still wound up being missed.
If you weren't involved in the out-of-game media from Chapter 2 to 3+4, you will never once assume that Dess is The Knight. You will assume that she is a Chara case, the lingering horror behind the obvious narrative which runs the plot, but is not directly involved (except for when she may be), but never the main villain, because the attention she's given is strictly inferred. She is relevant only through the eyes of other characters, she has no autonomy or independence in her own right as a character to deserve an established role until she makes her presence, and that's why she can only serve, AT THIS MOMENT, as a motivation, a greater contribution, etcetera. Chara had no screentime bar Genocide, and the entire plot ran off of them. Dess seems to be in the same boat.
As for the Knight themselves, the main antagonist, it can only be either Carol or Rudy, where the nuances are left.
And through those nuances, I wholeheartedly believe it to be Rudy.
The parallel is so obvious to me that it’s the reason I’m as against Dess Knight as I am for Rudy Knight
Dess is genuinely such a perfect haunting of the narrative that if she was reduced to an explicit humanised role it’d completely destroy how she’s been built up
Toby Fox spent 5 chapters building up Dess as the idea of a vanished girl, making her a completely humane and persistent force would be so awful
totally real concept art of rudy "holiday twists are always full of being the roaring knight which is just so crazy you gotta laugh" holiday by tony funks from chapter 6 newsletter #deltarune#deltarunefanart#rudyholiday
Day 24: Drawing on my phone because I'm away from my pc but gotta keep the challenge going lmao here is the beautiful Rudy portrait I just made on photo app lol
@mariosmask I’m a strong Rudyknight Champion, but yeah, Asrielknight is substantially better as a choice because we have a firm idea of who Asriel is as a character.
Only thing holding him back is the “you don’t need Undertale to play Deltarune” thing.
The biggest reason for why people don't stand with Dess Knight is because they're simply not as connected to the character to care, and you have to consider that. Flowey had a fun enough personality on his own to not be just "Asriel after", The Knight lacks that.
@SuperArios64 I’d be okay with it if Dess flat-out had a character for us to interact with, instead of being entirely characterised through in-game word-of-mouth.
SOMETHING wouldn’t hit as much if we had no expectation of Mari, nor the Masked Man with Claus.
@DraghettisSplat Oh, entirely. But I mean moreso for longevity. Kris, Vessel and Dess Knight were the biggest contenders, but the other two were immediately debunked when they appeared.
Rudy Knight banks on the juxtaposition between Rudy and The Knight, so Rudy appearing extremely friendly and courteous to Kris whilst, when scheming, he’s actually extremely abusive, it’d further imply an idea that his sickness pushes him to be aggressive, too.
I personally hold to the idea that Rudy absolves Kris of blame for Dess’ disappearance SO LONG as they contribute towards the effort of causing the roaring to bring her back.
@Torvic1225 Claus is present in Chapter 1 of Mother 3, that's the fundamental difference here. If Claus was just mentioned by name alone with the odd reference, the Masked Man reveal, too, would be awful.
Just wanna clarify Dess is absolutely an amazing character with what little we know, I just think her character serves best as the Chara archetype rather than the Asriel, since she's had literally zero autonomy and her only personality is expressed through other characters.
@LondinoStephen It's why I absolutely LOVE the theories that take a unique take and don't just run with whatever seems plausible off of redundant Chapter 2 information.
With Rudy Knight, of course, being the best one.
Dess Knight would work if we had a foundation of who Dess was outside of what she meant to others, because it'd make up for the gaping lack of a personality in the Knight themselves.
Not a big fan of Carol Knight, but at least Carol is a character to back the Knight's personality.
@Torvic1225 And in spite of it not being finished, we are 5/7 through it and Dess has not made a single appearance, opposed to the three of the Roaring Knight.
Again, as my point emphasises, assuming Dess Knight, there is no CURRENT backdrop for the main antagonist's personality.
