Unequal treatment has often been defended using legal frameworks, prevailing beliefs, or claims of necessity. Canadians should be cautious whenever different rules apply to different groups.

The question is not whether unequal treatment can be justified.
The question is: what principles are we willing to sacrifice in the process?

Constitutional rights, equality before the law, and the rule of law only matter if they apply consistently.
