Do you know Batoul?

Batoul is a young Lebanese mother who wandered from place to place, tried knocking on doors across this country, searching for a roof that would shelter her and her children.

No one opened a door.

A few hours ago, Batoul Hamdan and her children were killed.

Batoul… and her babies. 🖤

Next to her photo, there is a screenshot from her messages to friends. In those messages she says there was nowhere left for them to go. Nowhere that would take them in.

So much for the myth that "Lebanese people always help one another". The reality is far uglier. Anyone with a house, even a tiny 80 m² apartment, is demanding $1000 a month, plus six months in advance and another month for insurance.

For a mother fleeing bombardment with children in her arms, that is a death sentence.

So Batoul made a decision.

She decided to stay in her home in South Lebanon and face death there if it came, rather than be dragged into the humiliation of sleeping on the streets with her babies because she couldn't afford the greed of those who turned shelter into a business.

And now she is gone.

Batoul Hamdan and her children did not just die in a terrorist Israeli strike. They were abandoned long before that.

Remember her name.
