No reason he should still be out there. Now he won't be available until Sunday to piggyback Keller.
Unless he only agreed to pitch out of the bullpen if he can stat pad saves.
With an 8-run lead heading into the 8th inning, instead of using a low-leverage reliever (e.g. Brandon Bidois), that the situation would otherwise call for, the Pirates will send Carmen Mlodzinski back to pitch.
If it wasn't already, it's obvious that Mlodzinski is on a scripted schedule as opposed to pitching to team need, game situation and, most importantly - leverage.
π¨HOME. RUN. KONNOR. GRIFFIN! π¨
YEP - THATS RIGHT!
ABSOLUTELY ROCKETED OUTTA THERE! He has a triple and now a HOMER tonight!
GET HIM BACK UP HERE!!
Hey, the pitching staff allowed 3 runs the whole game.
You'll take that every day. The offense NEEDS KG back ASAP.
Try to get the win tomorrow with Ashcraft on the mound and just hang in there until KG and Cruz get back.
I like that DK gave Keller a chance at the 7th. He was rolling.
Maybe I would've had someone ready after the homer, but it can still be a QS and a win for him if the Pirates are brave enough.
Per Don Kelly, additional tests were negative for Jared Jones. He played catch today.
Additionally, Konnor Griffin will start a rehab assignment at Double-A Altoona tomorrow.
Justin Lawrence came in to pitch the seventh inning with a 16-2 lead and did this:
Walk
Walk
Walk
Strikeout
Walk
Double
Strikeout
Single
Threw just 17 of 40 pitches for strikes, allowed five runs, and recorded two outs.
Lawrence has allowed 12 runs in 6 innings with the Twins.
Can't just have it be 8-1 lol
I think Soto is a solid reliever, but he shouldn't be your best one. They will get a closer at the deadline.
Also, it doesn't help when he pitches once or twice a week.
Jared Triolo has hits in 10 of his past 14: .273 in that time, 4 doubles, 3 RBI, 5 walks. Had a 12-game on-base streak prior to last night.
(Ducks for cover)
I've been saying that the Pirates just need to hang around .500 both until he and Cruz get back and the deadline in general.
With them and some new pieces, they can make a run. Let's just avoid the sweep today.
On his weekly radio show, Pirates GM Ben Cherington says he expects Konnor Griffin to play rehab games before the end of the week βbarring something unforeseen.β
Expects Griffin to be in Pittsburgh (for a check-in) before then.
The Pirates are the only MLB team in the last 50 years to have the tying run on 3rd with 0 outs in the 9th inning 2 games in a row but lose both games.
Not sure what the discourse is over this. He was going for the triple no matter what happened and had rounded second before a throw decision was made.
The Phillies are my least favorite team, but not giving him the triple here would be silly.
It's insane how you can make a call to end the game like that and not be able to review it or have any look at the play.
And oh ya, you can't protest it either.
