This is the last image from the PGUA radar in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. It shows Rota, home to 1,893 people, enveloped in the eye of Category 5 Supertyphoon Bavi.

A buzzsaw eye like this is rare; this will be one of only six Category 5 tropical cyclones on record to make landfall on U.S. soil.

Winds likely gusted to 150-160 mph on Rota, which was also hard hit in April by Category 4 Sinlaku.

Inside the 22 mile-wide eye, a dearth of eerie calm. All the air that spirals into the cyclone ascends in the eyewall, colliding with the ceiling of the lower atmosphere. Some sinks back down in the eye, punching a clear, dry void. It’s an oasis of calm surrounded by a ring of hell.

It’s unclear when the radar will be restored, or if it has been damaged.

The ~2,000 people living on Rota just experienced a catastrophic whiteout of 180 MPH sustained winds as Super Typhoon Bavi’s western eyewall hit the island.

Then, for an hour, everything suddenly went quiet. The winds dropped to zero and the sky turned bright from misty sunshine, as the island found itself near the center of Bavi’s 901 MBAR Stadium Effect.

Now, Rota is reliving the ferocious eyewall all over again, this time in the eastern quadrant. Mass wind-induced deforestation is likely taking place.
