Going to a small-scale meetup in Korea opened my eyes to what cons could be. Everyone pitched in to rent a space, no one made money. We exchanged zines(doujins) for doujin and gifted each other merch. Just for the love of it, not to make profit.
been thinking mildly abt how anime cons used to be for all sorts of niche anime-adjacent interests but in recent years have become spaces where the niche and obscure cannot survive. Cons aren't a place for fandoms anymore. I think that's what a lot of complaints are identifying
