China Achieves First Successful Net Recovery of Reusable Long March 10B Rocket
China successfully launched the Long March 10B (CZ-10B) reusable launch vehicle today (10 July 2026) from the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site, marking a major milestone in the country’s commercial space ambitions. The mission achieved China’s first successful controlled recovery of a rocket first stage and the world’s first successful net-based recovery of an orbital-class launch vehicle.
The launch took place around midday from Launch Pad No. 2 at the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site.
Approximately six minutes after stage separation, the rocket’s first stage executed a controlled vertical return to the designated recovery zone at sea. Instead of landing on a conventional drone ship, the booster was successfully captured by the offshore recovery vessel “Navigator” (领航者) using a flexible net capture system, representing the first time such a recovery method has been successfully demonstrated for an orbital launch vehicle.
The Long March 10B is a new-generation commercial reusable liquid oxygen-kerosene rocket featuring a 5-metre-diameter core stage and standing nearly 70 metres tall. It is powered by seven reusable YF-100N engines. Even when configured for first-stage recovery, the rocket is capable of delivering at least 16 tonnes to low Earth orbit (LEO).
The successful mission represents a significant breakthrough for China’s commercial space sector and reusable launch technology. It fills a longstanding gap in China’s capability to operate a large-lift reusable commercial launch vehicle while demonstrating an innovative recovery approach that could reduce launch costs and improve operational efficiency for future missions.
The achievement also positions China among the leading nations advancing reusable launch systems, with the successful net recovery introducing a novel alternative to traditional landing platforms used by other space-launch providers.
interesting position paper throwing cold water on autoresearch/ai scientist: LLMs can't jump.
The thought experiment is this: Take an LLM with a 1905 knowledge cutoff. Feed it every paper, every dataset, every equation of that era. Could it invent general relativity?
No.
Discovery isn't one thing. It's three. You can induce — generalize from data, which lands you at Newton plus some epicycles to explain Mercury's weird orbit. You can deduce — derive rigorously from axioms you already have, which never gives you new axioms. Or you can jump — invent the frame itself, decide that spacetime curves. That third move is the one that matters, and it's exactly the one induction and deduction can't reach.
Penrose put it as three worlds: Physical, Mental, Platonic. Data flows from the world into a mind fine. But the new law has to be discovered into the Platonic world first — and that step is the jump. LLMs are induction machines running over what already exists. Structurally, they don't take it.
I think it’s a warning to AI scientists/autoresearch against collapsing two very different things into one word.
Hill-climbing: LLMs are already superhuman here, and autoresearch in this sense is real and moving fast.
Abduction/leap/jump: a new frame that reorganizes the field, that is a different act entirely, and nothing about scaling induction suggests you get there.
Most of what Autoresearch ships today will be spectacular hill-climbing. The jump is still ours for now.
Turns out it's possible to generate videos that maximally excite an arbitrary brain region using a simple search-based algorithm. It's a fully computational approach, so it's another way to speculate what a brain region represents, alongside other neuroscientific methods.
Select an arbitrary brain region->algorithmically generate a video that jacks it up. See the visuals on the webpage https://t.co/UzKyN8MHda
In silico (for now)
China's Real Estate market has erased all gains from the last 20 years.
Housing prices are expected to fall even further, in line with the Chinese policy that "houses are for living, not for speculation".
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this really just showing:
*In a trained autoregressive network, there is a subspace of internal activations that is especially aligned with future verbal output and downstream computation.*
Isn't this expected given how LLMs are trained? In fact, I suspect you could find this is many other task-optimized architectures, not just Transformers/Claude—it would be good to try this on RNNs, MLPs, CNNs, etc.
To every researcher in US frontier labs. You used to publish. You justified not because you were shipping something millions of people love. Now you are shipping only to Trump's cronies.
Consider your impact and legacy, you will be fine money wise. Monday is a good day to quit.
ngl it’s kinda wild that China is the land of hypercapitalist competition fueled by open-weight models anyone can use, and America is the land where the executive branch of government must personally approve you to have the privilege of giving a private company your money
Someday we'll look back at when the government tried to restrict AI with too many parameters like when they tried to restrict encryption with too many bits. Though unlike last time, this time there will be consequences. The world will see China as the clear AI leader.
Mid journey unveils the future of medical scanning:
"Less than a dozen of these machines operating together at full speed can do more full body scans than every MRI machine together on Earth. Our goal is to build a fleet of 50,000 of these scanners, capable together of doing a billion scans a month—enough to bring full body imaging to everyone on Earth."
Using thousands of specialized transducers, this prototype system shoots ultra-precise sound waves through the body at over 1,400 meters per second. As these sonic vibrations echo back, they are captured in data streams of 17 gigabytes per second, measuring changes finer than the width of an atom. A massive 2-petaflop compute ring then merges these thousands of sub-images to map out a highly detailed, 3D internal anatomy of organs and tissues in just 60 seconds.
"This is a new kind of infrastructure. It’s Full Body Ultrasonic Computational Tomography. No such device has ever been built until now, and yeah, we’re calling it the Midjourney Scanner."
My favorite quote from David, was that they want this to be a feel like a genuinely “nice” experience, not a “going to the doctor experience” they’re going to put these inside mid journey spas!

A reminder from Atomic Habits by James Clear:
“It doesn't make sense to continue wanting something if you're not willing to do what it takes to get it. If you don't want to live the lifestyle, then release yourself from the desire. To crave the result but not the process is to guarantee disappointment.”
It seems like most startups in San Francisco are selling products to each other
When I ask founders who their target audience is, 90% of the time it's "engineering and product teams, AI-native startups"
Feels like the same small group of target audience is being bombarded with a million products, whereas very few people are building for the 99% of the world
