The Cape Verde national team deserves to be remembered as the uncrowned champion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although its remarkable journey ended without lifting the trophy, Cape Verde earned the admiration and respect of football fans around the world through its fearless performances, unwavering determination, and extraordinary fighting spirit. In its first-ever World Cup appearance, the team delivered outstanding football and wrote one of the most inspiring stories of the tournament, eventually bowing out with honor after a heroic battle against the defending champions, Argentina.
Cape Verde proved that the greatness of a national team is not measured by its population, history, or resources, but by the courage, passion, and quality it displays on the pitch. While it did not become the champion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it won something equally enduringโthe hearts of millions of football fansโand truly earned the title of the Uncrowned Champion.
Sometimes i think poverty is not only about a lack of resources but also about the choices we make and the systems we choose to accept. For example, many of the trucks arriving at DP World (from Mombasa and Dar es salam) in Masaka today will not be processed. The same will happen on Monday because of the public holiday. Yet we continue to hear that unemployment remains a major challenge.
It raises a simple question; why not introduce part-time, causal or shift workers to keep operations running on weekends and public holidays? Instead, productivity comes to a standstill, and then we complain that countries like China are taking over our economies. China is what it is today because they took a deliberate decision to change their work ethics
If we are serious about economic transformation, we need to be willing to rethink our work culture, embrace productivity and move beyond our comfort zones. Otherwise, we should not be surprised when others outcompete us.

Listening to Gen (Rtd) Fred Ibingira recount how, during the insurgency of late 1990โs, commanders were required to sign letters accepting the ultimate consequences should they fail to stop the advance of the abacengezi, was a powerful reminder of what accountability looked like when Rwandaโs very survival was at stake.
The point is not the firing squad itself. It is that the responsibility to protect the nation was made unmistakably real.
This made me reflect on a question for all of us.
What is the equivalent, in our own fields, of that level of accountability? What consequence, standard or commitment is strong enough to keep us focused on the mission of rebuilding Rwanda and ensuring that our country never again falls into the hands of those who sought to destroy it?
Nations are not only protected by soldiers at the front. They are also protected every day by citizens, public servants, teachers, entrepreneurs, artists and leaders who refuse complacency and take their responsibilities seriously.
These were commanders who had already faced death on the battlefield. Yet what shook them was not simply the prospect of dyingโit was the prospect of failing in the duty entrusted to them.
That distinction says something profound about Rwandaโs sense of leadership.

An important finding from the Rwanda DHS 2025 is that although the countryโs overall HIV prevalence remains relatively low at 2.2%, women are almost twice as likely to be living with HIV as men. This disparity suggests that HIV vulnerability cannot be explained solely by individual behaviour. Structural and social factors, including womenโs ability to negotiate condom use, refuse unwanted sex, or leave high-risk relationships, may contribute significantly to their increased vulnerability.
The data also show that HIV prevalence rises with the number of lifetime sexual partners for both men and women, but the increase is substantially steeper among women. This finding indicates that women may experience greater health consequences from similar patterns of sexual behaviour, highlighting important gender differences in HIV risk.
The findings on polygamous unions are also noteworthy. Because polygamous relationships typically involve one man with multiple wives, the behaviour of a single individual can affect several partners simultaneously. If the husband acquires HIV, the risk of transmission extends across the entire relationship network, potentially increasing womenโs vulnerability even when they themselves have had only one partner.
Another important pattern is the significantly higher prevalence of alcohol consumption among men compared with women. When considered alongside the findings on intimate partner violence, this raises important questions about the role alcohol may play in contributing to violence, risky sexual behaviour, and increased health risks for women.
The finding that nearly four in ten women have experienced emotional, physical, or sexual violence from an intimate partner is particularly concerning. Beyond its direct impact on safety and wellbeing, intimate partner violence can limit womenโs autonomy and ability to make decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health, thereby increasing their vulnerability to HIV and other adverse health outcomes.
The higher prevalence of HIV in urban areas, particularly in Kigali, is another notable finding. While greater access to healthcare services in urban settings might be expected to reduce HIV prevalence, the data suggest that access to healthcare alone is insufficient. Factors such as increased mobility, larger social networks, and lifestyle patterns may also influence HIV transmission dynamics.
Overall, the findings demonstrate that HIV cannot be analysed in isolation from broader social determinants. Gender inequality, alcohol use, intimate partner violence, relationship structures, and patterns of social interaction are interconnected factors that shape HIV risk and health outcomes, particularly for women. Addressing HIV effectively therefore requires not only biomedical interventions but also policies and programmes that tackle these underlying social and structural determinants.
โAn โAmerica firstโ policy is likely to favor close relations with Congolese political leaders over democracy and human rights, an approach that could end up destabilizing the country,โ write @jdlzw, Reagan Miviri, and @jasonkstearns.

Great piece in Foreign Affairs from @jdlzw and @jasonkstearns on how Washingtonโs approach to peace in the DRC is running into a wall.
I agree with the authors that the Trump administrationโs efforts to โpolice Rwandan behaviorโ alone will not bring the war to an end. Both sides retain significant incentive to pursue their military and political objectives that outweighs the benefits of the peace deal, and this means that breaking the deadlock will require Washington to apply equal pressure on both sides using the tools at its disposal, including on Kinshasa to abandon the military solution and make some concessions as part of a deal with M23.
Iโve written repeatedly since last year that the absence of a DRC-M23 deal is one of the obstacles undermining peace in the east and thus the long-term success of the Washington Accords, now even more salient as Tshisekedi uses the war as a pretext to extend his grip on power.
The authors rightly point out that the administrationโs preference for regime continuity in the Congo as billions in US investment pour into the mining sector could backfire and further destabilize the country, in part because it โsends the message that the only way to remove him [Tshisekedi] is through extralegal means, pushing moderate opposition leaders to ally with or join armed rebel groups.โ
@liam_karr and I wrote in May that the increasingly one-sided US approach is counterproductive and enabling this power grab, which could risk its long-term partnership with the DRC.
