They Fought the British Together, Then Fought Each Other Before Independence | Ashanti vs. Nkrumah
1. In the 1950s, Ashanti leaders looked at the rise of Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP and saw not liberation, but control.
They wanted autonomy, even federalism, fearing that the richest territory of the Gold Coast would be ruled by a distant central government led by one man.
2. The unease cut deeper because this ruler was Black, African, and unapologetically centralist.
For Ashanti elites, colonial domination had merely changed hands. And they would rather be a separatist nation, ruled by their king, than be a part of the budding independent African nation.
3. In this rare footage and testimony, chiefs, lawyers, and power brokers explain why Ashanti resisted Nkrumah’s vision and how unity fractured on the eve of freedom.
Watch closely. The road to independence was never one road.
