This has been bothering me for sometime, and I feel like I need to get it off my chest.

The World Cup is meant to be football’s moment to unite the world, but right now, it feels like the opposite.I am sadly old enough to remember the 1966 World Cup, when England played West Germany in the final only two decades after the end of World War II. That game, at least to me as a young lad, felt like it was helping the healing process of a conflict where millions of lives were lost…

So as this summer approaches, on one side FIFA continues to push pricing models that put the tournament further out of reach for the very fans who built the game. The soul of football isn’t in corporate sponsorship packages, it’s in the stands, in the communities, in the people who live it every day.

On the other, the current stance of the United States government is making that sense of welcome far less certain. When visa access becomes more difficult, when the tone towards parts of the world feels more closed than open, it sends a message, intended or not, about who this World Cup is really for.

That really matters. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to attend five World Cups, and each of those were hosted by countries that made you feel welcome and invited you to enjoy the beautiful game in the most amazing manner. Mexico 1986, Italia 90, USA 94, France 98, Germany 2006…all amazing, and those countries greeted you with open arms, and were proud to welcome in the world to enjoy the game at its highest level

But you can’t call it the world’s game while quietly narrowing who gets to be part of it.

At a time when football could be a rare force for unity in a world that so badly needs it, we’re allowing it to become more exclusive, more controlled, and more divided.

This tournament has the chance to be a bridge, like it was in 1966…Instead, it risks becoming a symbol of the very barriers the game is supposed to break down.

That’s a profound missed opportunity, and I’m saddened we here in United States are struggling to replicate the welcome and open arms we showed back in 1994. I sincerely hope my fears are misplaced, and that everything will be spectacular, but I can’t help feeling we are on a path towards scoring a huge own goal…

I still remember the beginning, the excitement when he signed, the belief that he could be special… but I don’t think any of us could have imagined just how much he would give to this club. Goals, trophies, unforgettable nights at Anfield, and moments that will live forever in the hearts of supporters all over the world.

What always struck me most, though, was not just the player, but the man. Humble, relentless, proud to represent Liverpool, and fully aware of what the badge means to millions of people. He carried that responsibility with class every single day.

It was a privilege to be there at the start of this journey, and an even greater privilege to watch him light up the pitch along the way.

Thank you for everything you gave to Liverpool Football Club, on and off the pitch. You will always be part of the family, and your place in the history of this club is secure forever.

The utter irony of Putin and Trump meeting soon in Budapest to jointly seal Ukraine’s fate should not be lost on anybody. This is the very same city where the US, the UK, and Russia came together 31 years ago to give Ukraine ironclad assurances that its territorial integrity would be respected and protected within existing borders in exchange for giving up a third of the world’s nuclear weapons (to Russia!). Ukraine trusted the US, trusted the UK, transferred all its nuclear weapons to Russia, and joined the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Within 20 years, Putin effectively ripped up the Budapest Memorandum, ignored Russia’s pledge, and invaded and annexed Crimea. In 2022, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine finally removed all remaining doubts about Putin’s imperial greed.

If treaties and agreements between countries are to be trusted, the US and the UK must stand by the original Budapest Memorandum and give the Ukrainians everything they need to push Russia out of Ukraine, as President Trump said he would do before taking Putin’s latest call. It is the only way for Ukraine to get its territory back and put an end to this brutal invasion.

If the US and Russia continue to ignore the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, how on Earth can Ukraine be expected to have any faith in yet another Budapest memorandum signed in the same city between Russia and the United States? They can’t.
