The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon will take place on March 25, 2028, where six athletes will earn their spots on @TeamUSA for the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. ๐
BREAKING NEWS: USA Track & Field and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee have selected St. Louis, Missouri to host the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon on March 25, 2028 โ the first Olympic team selection event for the LA28 Games. The top three men and women will earn spots on Team USA, contingent on meeting the Olympic qualifying standard. Phoenix was the other city that bid for the Trials.
St. Louis hosted the 1904 Games, including the first Olympic marathon ever run on U.S. soil. The proposed course starts at Washington University (site of the 1904 Olympic stadium) and finishes inside Energizer Park, home of MLS club St. Louis CITY SC, in front of a projected 20,000 fans, which is something that has never been done at a Marathon Trials before.
The St. Louis Sports Commission will serve as the local organizing committee with support from Go! St. Louis as key partners in staging the event.
๐ The course starts near Washington University and runs toward downtown, the route passes the Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium before finishing inside Energizer Park. The final layout will be confirmed in the coming months.
๐ก๏ธ Historical weather data puts St. Louis at 48-62ยฐF around 11 a.m. on March 25.
๐บ NBC will broadcast live starting at 11 a.m. CDT.
For the third consecutive Trials, there is some uncertainty about whether the top three finishers will automatically make the team. The 2027 World Championship standards (2:06:00 men, 2:23:20 women) are dramatically faster than the 2024 Olympic standards. USATF expressed confidence that American performances are rising to meet the bar and that advocacy for a clean first-three-across-the-line selection is ongoing with World Athletics.
