SENATE ASKS SECURITY FORCES TO RESCUE ABDUCTED UTME CANDIDATES
The Senate on Thursday called on Nigeriaโs security forces to secure the unconditional release of 15 abducted ferry passengers by Sea Pirates including some UTME candidates traveling from Calabar to sit for their university entry examination in Oron.
The Senate also calls on
the Joint Admission And Matriculation Board, JAMB to establish more examination centres in each state to prevent students from traveling outside of their states to sit for the examination as a result of worsening security situation in the country.
The resolution of the Senate follows a motion by Senator Ekong Sampson , APC Akwa Ibom South.
Speaking on the incident , EKONG narrated how heavily armed pirates ambushed the ferry mid-sea, forcefully commandeered the vessel, before whisking away the passengers at gunpoint to unknown destinations.
He lamented that the crime has heightened fear and insecurity across the coastal communities; stressing the urgent need by the security forces to apprehend the perpetrators.
SENATE subsequently condemned in strong terms the abduction of the passengers; calling on
the Chief of Naval Staff, the Inspector General of Police, and other relevant security agencies to immediately deploy rescue operations to secure unconditional release of all the abducted victims.
The upper legislative chamber also
called for increased surveillance, patrol, and intelligence-gathering operations along the CalabarโOron waterways and adjoining creeks; even as it mandated its Committees on Navy, Marine Transport, and National Security and Intelligence to urgently investigate the rising spate of maritime insecurity in the Niger Delta waterways.
We Nigerian students have never had it so good the way we have it under President Tinubu Since 1999โ โ NANS Pres. Oladoja
The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Olushola Oladoja, has said Nigerian students have never experienced the level of support they are currently getting under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since the return of democracy in 1999.
Speaking during an interview with various Nigerian news channels, he said:
โNANS, we Nigerian students have never had it so good the way we have it under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since the inception of democracy in 1999. But this is the first President that decides to give student loan today to go to school. The rates at which students drop out of school because of school fees is no longer there.โ
He also highlighted what he described as a youth-friendly approach in governance, particularly in appointments within the administration.
โAnd I can assure you, if you look at his appointment, this is the first time weโre having a youthful minister as a youth minister in this country. The minister that is doing it, heโs just like our colleague, we can meet him.โ
Oladoja further expressed support for the administration, saying its policies are aimed at the future of young Nigerians.
โAnd I assure you, we the youth, all what Buhari is doing is for us. I told people, the man has limited time to do here, to live on this earth, we are the one he is doing all this for, itโs for the future of this country. So why wonโt we support him?โ He concluded.
