People often suggest that it’s unrealistic to strive for a goal of zero deaths on our roads, but it’s already happening in places like Helsinki.
How?
By simply reducing the speed of cars.
Speed kills people, speed maims people for life.
Thanks to @GalwayCoCo for carrying out a speed survey of 45,000 vehicles at Craughwell village in the 60kmh zone. 84% of traffic exceeded the speed limit. Average speed was 88km/h, with a max speed of 159Km/h. This is indicative of what’s happening across Ireland. @GardaTraffic@RSAIreland@Dept_Transport need to act urgently.
The number of pedestrians dying on Irish roads doubled in 2022. In all we lost 155 people on Irish roads last year. So far this year 92 people have been killed on our roads, including 22 pedestrians and cyclists. That's a terrible indictment of us as a country, yet these tragic losses are dismissed as collateral damage, something we should deem acceptable so that we can facilitate people driving at speed.

"A road is designed so most people will naturally drive the speed limit, slow down at crossings, and be aware of other road users, without being explicitly told to do so."
