No better way to start 2022 than revel in earlier optimism of being in a new phase of pandemic. Further variants always a likelihood, however, Omicron in SA hopefully a prelude to what to expect moving ahead- death rate only 13% compared to delta wave.
Inconsistency breeds ⬇️ global public confidence in science-based interventions to mitigate #COVID19. This sort of absolute bilge is a prime example. Please reconsider this damaging 💩 @GovMauritius @MauritiusPM @FranceGov @EmmanuelMacron@FrenchEmbassyZA
First time modellers actually tell us that their predictions are predetermined by policymakers. To keep their jobs they have to produce fitting models. A must read Twitter conversation between Mr Fraser and the Sage Covid Modelling Committee Chairman! https://t.co/KJOnEzIieW
Psychologically, it’s extremely difficult for public health to admit COVID isn’t that dangerous because they have tons of excess deaths to account for—and if they can’t attribute them to COVID, then they have nothing to attribute them to except their own lockdowns and mandates.
The Economist reports that Sweden--that intrepid place that did not lock down--has the lowest excess all-cause mortality of any European country this year. Interesting.
Before the COVID pandemic, scientists & @WHO strongly OPPOSED lockdowns due to their severe socioeconomic costs & entirely speculative benefits. Then why did they change their minds? Easy. Political figures use lockdowns to achieve their political goals.

What a picture of a wasted two years! Before lockdowns, people were talking about endemicity. Then came 21 months of massive confusion and vast harm. Now finally we see clarity returning.
No scientist is in sole possession of the scientific truth. The truth emerges out of free discussion, experiment, and open minds. Why should the public -- which funds science -- not be allowed to witness the process?
Most unwelcome 'pause'! Contact tracing & quarantine in the 🇿🇦 context never worked & is a ridiculous waste of time. @HealthZA needs to have the courage of its convictions, look at the science & take the pragmatic approach @ShabirMadh@FrancoisVenter3 https://t.co/qAX28oS67E

One week later and heading into week 5 of Omicron wave in Gauteng SA and outlook remains positive for what matters most - relatively low rates of severe disease and death. Many other provinces now also showing rapid rate of increase, however in Gauteng:
