You must surely be familiar with Neena Gupta—
who is often portrayed as a "feminist icon" for Indian women—
due to her relationships with the married West Indies cricketer Viv Richards, as well as several other men.

• She married her boyfriend, Aman Kusum, but divorced him a year later.

She stated that her dreams were so ambitious that she could not be content with merely being a housewife.

• After moving to Mumbai in 1981, she entered into a live-in relationship with a new boyfriend.

• She claims that he left her in 1983 because they were both struggling financially.

• Her father sold his land in Delhi to purchase a 1BHK flat for her in Mumbai.

• She worked in several successful films and television serials.

• In 1986, she entered into a live-in relationship with Alok Nath, though she notes that they never married.

• In 1987, she entered into a live-in relationship with—and became engaged to—Sharangdev Pandit, but the engagement was called off.

• In 1987—a year when she was struggling to find work—she met the West Indies cricketer Viv Richards.

Despite knowing that he was a married man, she began a relationship with him and became pregnant in 1989.

• She made her relationship with Viv Richards public in order to garner media attention.

• Viv Richards refused to marry her or offer her a place in his home, yet they maintained their relationship for many years.

• She sold her 1BHK flat and, by adding ₹9 lakhs from her parents, purchased a 3BHK flat in Juhu.

• In the interim, she decided to live with her maternal aunt and uncle.

• It is alleged that her aunt evicted her from the house in the middle of the night; some claim this occurred because Neena was caught in a compromising situation with her maternal uncle.

• Subsequently, her maternal uncle provided her with a new home to live in, and a few weeks later, she moved into her new 3BHK flat.

• Throughout the late 1990s, Neena and Viv continued to appear together at various events.

During this same period, she entered into a live-in relationship with another married man.
She did not disclose his name publicly, and she left Mumbai to move to Delhi for his sake.

• She stated that he... The man was unwilling to leave his wife to marry her; consequently, the relationship ended.

• In the early 2000s, she began dating another married man, Vivek Mehra, who had two children.

Subsequently, Vivek Mehra divorced his wife and married Neena in 2008.

There are also women who, earning less than ₹5,000 a month and lacking the security of a stable home, struggle to raise their children with dignity.

In contrast, Neena Gupta received every comfort and privilege from her parents; yet, she repeatedly engaged in relationships with various men, became pregnant, and was ultimately elevated to the status of a "feminist icon." If such women are to be regarded as sources of inspiration, then one should not be surprised by the moral decline of society.
