I'd just add one nuance: the Winter Soldier is not a separate identity that serves as the moral agent of his actions, as the Hulk does in Bruce’s case. So it wouldn’t be correct to say that Bucky was a victim of the WS; rather, *both* Bucky and the Winter Soldier were victims. For the Winter Soldier is the manifestation of Bucky’s victimization.

The Winter Soldier was not merely the complete absence of Bucky as an individual; it was his body stripped of every trace of consciousness, agency, autonomy, self-determination, and everything that defines a sense of self—a body that was controlled remotely.

In fact, I was just talking to one of my former psychotraumatology professors, and we came to the conclusion that, due to all the torture Hydra subjected Bucky to:

- Erasure of his identity and autobiographical continuity through deliberate brain damage caused by ECT
- (highly likely) forced drug addiction
- Reduction of his brain activity to a REM sleep state through Pavlovian conditioning using keywords
- In addition, the decades of torture, isolation, and captivity alone would already cause a severe deterioration in his sense of self

His sense of ipseity/minimal self/selfhood (which, in psychology and phenomenology, refers to the intimate, fundamental experience of feeling like oneself that precedes any reflection) was eliminated, along with every degree of agency, will, and autonomy in a human being, reducing him to a shell controlled by a third party.

This nullifies even the slightest degree of agency (and thus, moral agency) on the part of the Winter Soldier, because he wasn’t even an agent—he was the product of the cruelest dehumanization, which turned him into an object under the control of another being.

The flashes of memory that Bucky was able to recover in the future would therefore *not* even be “accurate” fragments of what happened, but rather distorted and altered fragments, stored primarily as somatic memories in the nervous system—both due to the brain damage itself and because a mind subjected to extreme stress is incapable of storing traumatic memories in a cohesive manner.

In other words, the episodic memory of the events (such as the faces of the people the WS was forced to kill) would NOT be accurate memories, but rather the opposite. And most likely, he would only have recovered a limited detail or sequence after an outside source provided context about the event (as was the case with the recording in Siberia).

The extent to which traumatic memories can resurface in cases of brain damage (even on its own) and exacerbated by severe CPTSD is unpredictable, and *under NO circumstances* could they be considered “proof of guilt.” Tony, as a brilliant mind, should have no trouble understanding this.

Bucky and the Winter Soldier (as a dissociated part of him) are innocent victims, and there should be no doubt about it... 💔💔
