And yet, at the very same time, this government has been adamant about placing a former Prime Minister in this state hospital despite a court-directed preference for treatment at Shifa International, citing exceptional medical care along with security.

condolences should not become the end of this story but we shall see 14 dead babies turn into a headline, an inquiry and a few dismissals.

A newborn cannot demand an SOP.
A mother should not have to demand a fire exit.
And a hospital should never become a place where parents fear they are sending their children to die.

Yet this government seems to have immunity from accountability for everything.

What a heart-wrenching tragedy, probably the worst human tragedy in Islamabad since the Ojhri Camp disaster in 1988: Capital’s flagship hospital has machines which don’t function even when a jailed ex-PM is in for treatment under Supreme Court orders & now, in this case, on top of faulty wiring which apparently caused the fire, there’s no SOP for such emergencies in the Hospital whose doors were apparently locked, preventing escape, topped by tardy rescue response! They can’t fix the basics & then people of Pakistan have to suffer their tall talk of Reform & Restructuring of the State! Monumental Incompetence!
