🚨 4 Tornadoes in Maryland spanned 6 Minutes.

🗓️ Tuesday, July 28, 2026 will be remembered as one of the most remarkable tornado events in recent Maryland history.

⏰ Between 6:12 PM and 6:18 PM, the National Weather Service confirmed four separate tornadoes:
📍 The alternated between Anne Arundel and Talbot Counties - opposite sides of the Chesapeake Bay.

🌪️ 6:12 PM – Trappe (Talbot Co.) – EF-1 (90–100 mph)
🌪️ 6:15 PM – Lakeshore (Anne Arundel Co.) – EF-1 (100 mph)
🌪️ 6:17 PM – Cape St. Claire (Anne Arundel Co.) – Rating Pending (final survey underway)
🌪️ 6:18 PM – Trappe (Talbot Co.) – EF-0 (70–80 mph)

Just six minutes separated all four tornadoes, highlighting how quickly severe weather can evolve across Maryland.

‼️ This event is a reminder that when a Tornado Warning is issued, seconds matter. Have multiple ways to receive alerts and be ready to move to your safe place immediately.

⛈️ 💨 Quite a bit of additional damage was experienced from damaging winds and lightning strikes.

📝This Canadian wildfire smoke may have rewritten the record books.
🥇 1. July 17, 2026 – AQI 260 (Very Unhealthy) ⭐ Highest on record

🥈 2. June 29, 2023 – AQI ~205 (Very Unhealthy)

🥉 3. June 8, 2023 – AQI 187 (Unhealthy)

4️⃣ June 7, 2023 – AQI 156 (Unhealthy)

5️⃣ June 30, 2023 – AQI ~150–180 (Unhealthy)

⚠️ All five of these events were caused by smoke from Canadian wildfires, not local pollution.

For comparison:

* 🟡 51–100: Moderate
* 🟠 101–150: Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
* 🔴 151–200: Unhealthy
* 🟣 201–300: Very Unhealthy
* ⚫ 301+: Hazardous

For air quality, it depends on the type of record:

* 🌫️ EPA Air Quality Index (AQI): Reliable daily AQI records go back to the late 1990s, when the current AQI system was adopted (1999).

* 🔬 PM2.5 (fine particle pollution): Continuous regulatory monitoring in Baltimore generally goes back to 1999–2000.

* 🏭 Earlier pollution records: Ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon
monoxide, and total suspended particulates exist back into the 1970s under the Clean Air Act.

* 📜 Before the 1970s: Records become sparse and are not directly comparable because monitoring methods and pollutants were different.
