I am embarking on a journey to better understand why and how we give.
Charitible and humanitarian giving have ancient roots.
The impulse to give is woven into the fabric of human history, from the concept of tzedakah (justice) in Judaism and zakāt (purification) in Islam, to dāna (generosity) in Buddhism and caritas (love) in Christianity.
While our methods have evolved, the fundamental human desire to support one another remains constant.
Give me a follow and let's learn about giving together.

Understanding why we give might not be as simple as it seems...
Extensive research supports a “multi-motive” view of giving.
Many donors care about recipients’ welfare (“altruism”), but also derive utility from the act of giving itself (warm-glow/impure altruism), from reputational or identity benefits (signaling/status), and from compliance with social expectations (norms/social pressure).
This multi-motive view helps explain why:
- framing and social information can shift donations
- some incentive schemes backfire (motivation crowding-out)
- government or large-donor funding can both crowd out and crowd in private giving depending on how it changes fundraising behavior, perceived quality, and donor beliefs.
This has made me think about my own motivations for giving.
What motivates your giving?

🧩 The #PostTruth era is a complex puzzle, but understanding its roots can help us devise effective strategies. #DigitalLiteracy#AI https://t.co/KBx3ZiSbS8
As a kid, I always wondered how you could get to the point of never leaving bed like the grandparents in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory…. as an adult, I totally get it.
I’ve considered the folks at Campaign Solutions colleagues for a long time before today. We’ve been in many foxholes together over the last decade. This move gives both teams global understanding of each other’s strategies and tactics to better serve our clients.
@RunWithWesley @pushdigital I’ve worked with both
@PushDigital and @CampSol for the last two cycles in the biggest Senate races in America. Both firms are the best in the business at what they do. Combining them instantly forms a top-notch digital powerhouse. Congrats!
