Another great #ICOSET@RCSEd talk
Trainers value enthusiasm, professional behaviour & taking responsibility
But need time, resource & support
Survivor bias amongst trainers & they train as they were trained
No incentive to be a good trainer nor change training
Rory Clarke flying the flag for @NHSWTE_NEY Future Leaders Programme talking about the importance of giving trainees autonomy and resource to drive training improvements.
If you're a gen surg Trainee in the UK please fill in this survey! Evri is doing great work teaching those of us less research inclined, and what more is trying to integrate it into training!

@rwc90 Oh and we've done a webinar through the Moynihan academy last year

This needs all of us to act as allies, advocate for our colleagues and spread the word so that people know this before getting pregnant or supervising a pregnant trainee
If you know this information, and you still make pregnant trainees in your programme do nights/on calls/unadjusted hours the SECOND you find out they are pregnant, your're not just part of the problem for these complications, you are directly responsible
Up to 82% of pregnant surgeons experience miscarriage, preterm delivery, and intrauterine growth restriction. Occupational hazards, including prolonged standing, physical exertion, overnight shifts, and teratogenic exposure, contribute to these risks.

I genuinely want to know what surgical reg is going to agree to a locum at this rate? Surely the only outcome from this is the shifts don't get filled- so is this the intention? @wannabehawkeye
These new extra-contractual rates in @uhbtrust are abysmal.
The average hourly rate for a plumber is £50 per hour.
For an emergency plumber it is £112.50 with a £110 call out fee.
Massive withdrawal of locums is the only answer to this.
@RobLaurensonD4P I don't know the ins and outs enough, but I would say I have seen many surgical trainees who are pregnant working nights and on calls. Maybe that is their choice- but if the evidence suggests it could cause harm you have to wonder what is considered "reasonable"
Another comment that 5 yrs of 80 hr work weeks isn’t enough to train competent general surgeons. Listen ppl, if you can’t take a person & do this in 5 yrs, the problem isn’t limiting the work week, it’s why you are allowing so much of this persons time to be wasted.
