irst Prayer of the Continental Congress, 1774

The Prayer in the First Congress, A.D. 1774
O Lord our Heavenly Father, high and mighty King of kings, and Lord of lords, who dost from thy throne behold all the dwellers on earth and reignest with power supreme and uncontrolled over all the Kingdoms, Empires and Governments; look down in mercy, we beseech Thee, on these our American States, who have fled to Thee from the rod of the oppressor and thrown themselves on Thy gracious protection, desiring to be henceforth dependent only on Thee. To Thee have they appealed for the righteousness of their cause; to Thee do they now look up for that countenance and support, which Thou alone canst give. Take them, therefore, Heavenly Father, under Thy nurturing care; give them wisdom in Council and valor in the field; defeat the malicious designs of our cruel adversaries; convince them of the unrighteousness of their Cause and if they persist in their sanguinary purposes, of own unerring justice, sounding in their hearts, constrain them to drop the weapons of war from their unnerved hands in the day of battle!
Be Thou present, O God of wisdom, and direct the councils of this honorable assembly; enable them to settle things on the best and surest foundation. That the scene of blood may be speedily closed; that order, harmony and peace may be effectually restored, and truth and justice, religion and piety, prevail and flourish amongst the people. Preserve the health of their bodies and vigor of their minds; shower down on them and the millions they here represent, such temporal blessings as Thou seest expedient for them in this world and crown them with everlasting glory in the world to come. All this we ask in the name and through the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son and our Savior.
Amen.

How Can a Loving God Send People to Hell?
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 NKJV)
The question of why a loving God would send someone to hell comes up a lot. In reality this is the wrong question. It already carries the presumption that God sends people to hell. It’s like the cops coming to your house because they thought you had robbed a store but you were nowhere around at the time it happened. They knock on your door and the first question they ask is not where you were on the night of the robbery or whether you have an alibi, but rather they ask why you robbed the store. This isn’t really a fair question but we do this with God all the time. A more accurate question is, “Would an all-loving God send someone to hell?” The answer is no! Do people go to hell? The answer is yes. Let’s look at some scripture. We all know John 3:16 but often pass over John 3:17-18.
“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3:17-18 NKJV)
These verses are clear that we were already condemned. It’s not that an all-loving God is sending people to hell but that an all-loving God saw people headed to hell and made a way out! Not only a way out but the simplest way out. We do not need to do anything except receive God’s gift to us by giving our life to Him. Jesus did the hard part for us and took our place so we could be restored to the Father. When God created a perfect world there wasn't hell waiting for bad people. Hell wasn’t created for you but neither was heaven. This world was created for you and we wrecked that so God paid a big price to restore us.
“The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s; But the earth He has given to the children of men.” (Psalms 115:16 NKJV)
““Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:” (Matthew 25:41 NKJV)
Hell was created for the devil and His angels, not for man. When man chose to listen to the devil over God, sin condemned man and tainted his blood. This is why we are all born into sin. God saw this and had to establish a new blood line through the blood of Jesus. God is not wanting anyone to go to hell but wants everyone to accept the price that was paid.
“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:9 NKJV)
God is not willing that any should perish! We ask why an all-loving God would send people to hell and yet an all-loving God is asking why people won’t accept Him and the gift He paid for. God made hell for the devil and He is doing everything in His power to keep people from following the devil there. At this point you may be saying, “But it’s not fair that we all suffer because of Adam’s choice”. I get that, but let’s take Adam out of the equation. If we don’t consider what Adam did but only what each one of us has done; how are we doing then? Did we make it through life without sin? No, we are all sinners. I agree to a point that it’s not fair that we are born into sin but you know what else isn’t fair? That we are all set free by one Man, Jesus! What’s not fair is that we sinned against a loving God and He knew we couldn’t make it on our own. So, an all-loving God sent His only Son to pay for what we never could. God paid the price Himself for us and asks only that we receive this gift by faith. God loves people and doesn’t want one person to go to hell. God does not send anyone to hell. People choose hell by refusing to receive the sacrifice Jesus made by dying in their place.
