September 18, 2010: Michigan State with a fake FG 29-yard TD pass on a play called “Little Giants” to beat Notre Dame 34-31 in overtime in East Lansing.
Story time. The first real job I ever had was waiting tables in East Lansing. The first day off of training and on my own, guess who decided to walk in: Mark Dantonio. And him and his wife sit directly in my section. Just my goddamn luck.
At this point I'm having a mild panic attack trying to find ways to not take this table. My co-workers are hyping me up to go out there. Hilarious scenes. I finally work up the courage to approach the table.
Swear to god I go "Hello MR. D, my name is [peach] and I'll be on your team tonight!!!" He immediately picks up on my fear, and can probably see the sweat coming off me. I fumble through the drink order and scribble some illegible words on my notepad.
Fast forward to somehow making it through the meal without ruining their entire night, I pick the check up. He'd left me the best tip I EVER received in my years of waiting tables. Under the signature line he wrote "Great job for your first day. Everyone starts somewhere."
I still think about that note all the time. It helped me believe in myself. And most importantly, it speaks to who Mark Dantonio is as a person.
He created Margaritaville is what he did. He coined the phrases “5 o’clock somewhere” and “cheeseburger in paradise” single-handed. He was a brave American singer-songwriter who pioneered the island escapism lifestyle. And in this house, Jimmy Buffett is a hero, end of story.
