In light of recent news, it's worth noting that the association between acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) use during pregnancy and childhood behavioral issues is not new.

This study from 2016 found a 30% increase in the risk of hyperactivity symptoms among children (both genders) exposed to acetaminophen during pregnancy. In boys, exposure was also linked to autism spectrum disorder symptoms in a frequency-dependent manner.

Causation remains unestablished, but it's exciting that OBGYNs will be getting guidance on this increased risk to inform women.

A new review summarizes studies showing that (in vitro) microplastics cause cell senescence, modify gene expression, boost oxidative stress & inflammation, promote bone breakdown, and impair stem cell differentiation. In animals, microplastics accumulate in bones, stunt growth, and hinder bone-building.

The human impacts are unclear, but we should start considering how plastic exposure may be impacting bone health - a key component of longevity.
