Their rehab isn’t your story.

It’s not that you were doing “too much” or performing an exercise “the wrong way” that got you injured.
You probably did “too much, too soon” or weren’t moving the way your structure or current level of mobility/strength could tolerate at that time.
Graded exposure is 🔑
Having pain is like being forced to take an exam.
You might be able to wing it and get by with a decent grade,
But you’ll probably get a better grade with an outlined study guide that you use every day.
A better rehab/training program = better, longer lasting results
The current obesity rate in the U.S. is over 40%
In a survey done in 2014, healthcare professionals had an obesity rate of 32%, probably higher today
How is it alright for healthcare providers to provide health education without following it themselves?
Don’t mistake convenience for quality.
- Healthy food > Fast food
- Quality strength training > Trying to burn calories quickly
- Deep relationships > Knowing a lot of people
All of the good things take time.
General principles of living a healthier lifestyle:
- Drink more water
- Eat protein
- Eat more vegetables
- Move and move often
- Make money for you and yours
- Smile and laugh
- Spend time with the ones you love
- Continue to grow as a human
- Enjoy where you’re at in life
What a gym membership costs:
- ~$45/month
What a gym membership can give you in return:
- A longer life to spend with loved ones
- More energy throughout the day
- A better feeling/looking body
- Confidence
- A community to meet new people
If we took this type of approach with all of our patients, we would have a lot of them moving better a lot sooner than mindlessly throwing exercises at them with the sole intension of “they need to get stronger”
Fundamental programming for athletes requires an understanding of positions and demands of sport, understanding potential breakdowns or adjustments that need to be accounted for, and a rolodex of exercise interventions for progression or regression of exercise interventions

Working with athletes takes a similar approach, where exercise selection and acquisition of performing a task in the gym needs to have some form of TRANSFERABILITY to the demands or positions that athlete will be put in during their time in play.

We work with people who want to improve their FUNCTION
This requires a mindset shift to understanding and using PERFORMANCE as a proxy for outcome measurements
Relative higher level performance needs SKILL ACQUISITION of certain movement patterns to take hold for improvement ➡️
Physical therapists need to understand the fundamental aspects of programming strength and conditioning for athletes.
And I mean ATHLETES in the conventional thought process of the term, not physique sports.

What most people think they need to get lean:
- major calorie deficit in a short amount of time
- 5AM fasted cardio
- “fit” teas and cleanses
What most people ACTUALLY need to get lean:
- 8 hours of sleep
- a program to help preserve muscle
- hydration
- high protein diet
Rehab isn’t always about adding new exercises in.
It’s about identifying a goal, reverse engineering how to achieve that goal, and identifying when is the right time for introducing stress variables in training that allow the least cost effective means of getting there.
Most athletes I see for PT have a programming issue.
Sometimes it’s doing too much, too soon.
A lot of times, it’s the earlier stages of programming that fails to identity stressors that athletes are NOT going to be getting in their sport that may help decrease risk of injury
Powerlifters need to perform more single leg strength work and get out of the sagital plane.
Runners need more single leg strength and plyometric work and less miles on the track.
