In 1993, Jean Augustine made history as the first Black woman elected to Canada's House of Commons, representing Etobicoke-Lakeshore in Ontario.

During her time in office, Jean championed equity, education and democratic inclusion. She introduced both the 1997 motion to install the first monument featuring women on Parliament Hill, and the 1995 motion that led to the national recognition of #BlackHistoryMonth in Canada. 👏

We’ve come a long way with how we keep Ontario’s voters list accurate – here’s a look. 📜

✅ During elections in 1933, door-to-door enumeration was introduced to maintain a current list of voters.

✅ Fast forward to 1998 when the Permanent Register of Electors for Ontario was established, creating a record of registered electors that could continually be updated.

✅ 2017 marked the launch of eReg, which became vReg with the introduction of the Register to Vote brand on this day in 2024. This online tool allows electors to easily check, update, add or remove their information.
