Before this year comes, at long last, to an end -- indulge me as I reflect on some @propublica data team highlights. 2020 was… shall we say… a challenge, but our reporters rose to the occasion and produced some of ProPublica’s best data journalism ever.
Unregulated contaminants have been found in the tap water of tens of millions of Americans in the past decade, but the EPA hasn’t yet regulated them. Why has there been so little movement on these emerging threats? Here’s what I found for @propublica https://t.co/xOmypf7E6E
Hedge fund Alden Global Capital is gobbling up more small town newspapers in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton and Pottsville PA. The vulture fund destroys local news, sucks out the assets and eliminates journalism accountability in these towns. Terrible. https://t.co/bqEsjqTafa
1/ NEW from @ProPublica: We’ve spent the last year studying a trove of data that has never been public: millions of stock trades made by thousands of the wealthiest taxpayers in the U.S.
What we learned was incredibly illuminating 🧵👇
a few weeks ago, during a data team meeting, @irenatfh sat, listening, painting watercolor portraits of fish. it was very calming. of course, as is @propublica’s wont, the backstory was much more detailed: https://t.co/XjtZrACGZr
Thousands of students a year get ticketed by police for behavior at school.
They can face hundreds of dollars in fines – even though a state law bans schools from fining students as discipline.

Some personal news: in two weeks, I’ll be joining @propublica for a year as a data reporter working on local reporting projects!
I’m so grateful for this opportunity — ProPublica’s work helped inspire me to go into journalism, so it feels a bit unreal to be joining the team.
very very proud of my colleagues on the @propublica data & news apps teams + our LRN partners. and a well-deserved congrats to @rob_barry & co. at the @WSJ!
NEW: ProPublica analysis of Secret IRS Files shows that more than half of America’s 100 richest people exploit special trusts to avoid estate taxes

The power of data reporting: @WSJ reviewed financial disclosure forms filed annually by roughly 700 federal judges who held individual stocks of large companies, and compared those holdings to tens of thousands of court dockets. https://t.co/uCVlWur4o0 @coulterjones
Today marks the end of a spectacular 10 weeks at @propublica
Thank you so much to @IBWellsSociety for giving me the chance to step into the world of investigative journalism
Thank you to all the brilliant people on the data team and to my editors @HannahFresques and @ryanngro
We reviewed tax info for dozens of U.S. pro sports team owners.
Owners often report incomes for their teams that are millions below real-world earnings and pay lower rates than players and even stadium workers.

1/ It started in late Jan. when we noticed odd videos like this one on YouTube and Twitter.
Today, my latest for @propublica and @nytimes uncovers one of the most elaborate efforts to date by the CCP to deny its ongoing oppression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
How we got here:
New: Thousands of videos of Uyghurs denying abuses against their community are showing up on Twitter and YouTube. They’re part of an elaborate influence campaign by Chinese officials to counter reports of human rights violations in Xinjiang. https://t.co/kQhejkZfh3
Our final summer interns will be working at @propublica! Welcome @amichelej, a recent @MedillSchool grad, who will be the engagement intern and @Invisibae, a rising senior @HowardU, will be the data intern. They start next week! Learn more about them here https://t.co/EFeZ9eaqoM
