Big up yuhself for calling it out. Jamaica really needs a serious reculturing around cleanliness. Littering can’t remain “normal.” How we treat our public spaces says a lot about the pride we have in our country.

Last night in the Turtle River Park parking lot in Ocho Rios, St Ann. Older gentleman casually throws his KFC out of his car, and after a few minutes drives further down in the parking lot (you can see his car in my rear view mirror).

I confront him about it and he lies, says it fell off the top of his car and he didn’t realise. I tell him there’s a massive dumpster literally a few inches away. It would take him 20 seconds to get to it. Maybe 10 if he takes larger strides.

Clearly embarrassed, he apologises, leaves his car, picks up the garbage, and what does he do with it? He throws it behind the hedge you’re seeing in the picture. In his mind, it’s not littering if nobody can see it.

I confront him again, explaining that the dumpster was right in front of him. He says, “Me never see it. Me dash it innah di bush.” I said, “Throwing it in the bush is wrong.” He says, “It wi rotten.”

At that point I realised all hope was lost.

I hope this doesn’t come across as complaining, but @ScotiabankJM, it is beyond unacceptable that customers have to wait over three hours just to collect a credit card and get a replacement debit card.

A simple process should not take this long.

We live in an Attention Economy. As a society, we say we value teachers more, but our wallets say we value entertainment. We complain about teacher salaries while paying $100 for a stadium ticket or $15 a month for Netflix. The money follows the eyeballs. If we spent as much money on Education PPVs as we do on Boxing matches, teachers would be driving Ferraris.
