Ordinary Abundance. This is the greatest thing I've read in weeks. No kidding. This should win a Pulitzer in a category not yet invented. https://t.co/iqnoACNt6z
Kinda funny that the two stories dominating my X feed are:
1. Needing to take 5% of net worth from billionaires to prop up government spending
2. Fraudsters brazenly taking billions of dollars of taxpayer money with little being done to stop it
"I promise to not raise your taxes" and "I promise to not cut your benefits" are the two popular political promises that are inconsistent with the much more needed promise "I promise to cut the budget deficit to about 3 percent of GDP" that is required to prevent a big debt/dollar crisis. There is no way that the deficit/debt bomb problem can be sustainably dealt with unless there is a mix of tax revenue increases and spending decreases that are determined in a bipartisan way. Our representatives in Washington, DC, both Republicans and Democrats, know this is true. They understand the need to reduce the deficit by having those from both sides chip in a bit (e.g., a 4 percent increase in tax revenue and a 4 percent spending cut) which would lead to a supply/demand balance improvement for US debt which in turn would lower interest rates. Lower interest rates would help reduce the budget deficit as well as help the markets and the economy. But because politics have become so absolutist, they feel they can't go down this obviously best path because both their constituents and their parties will throw them out of office if they explored this more balanced approach. To me, that’s a tragedy.

Okay, let's get some ideas going. Here's how I'd change elementary public school physical education (and school in general)
1. Barefoot is allowed and encouraged
The human kinetic chain starts with the feet. If the feet are constrained in any way, you retard the growth, development, and expression of biomechanics.
2. Outside is the default.
Instead of 10 minutes of outdoor play time, class is spent outdoors whenever possible, weather allowing. Kids focus better this way (especially those with ADHD), and the exposure to natural light restores and maintains their circadian health.
Kids who frequently spend time outdoors get sick less often and show better motor skills and physical coordination.
Kids with exposure (even just visual) to nature have better self-discipline.
3. Fewer rules at recess.
Kids can climb trees, roughhouse, leap fences, ride bikes, play tag, play dodgeball, play butts up, and all the other classic playground games that carry a modicum of danger. Kids won’t be expelled for playing cops and robbers or making finger guns.
Staff intervenes only if kids request it or injury is imminent. The whole point is to introduce kids to risk. Navigating relatively small risks (skinned knee, hurt feeling, short fall, wounded pride) builds mettle and prepares developing brains to deal with bigger risks. People talk about school as preparation for the meat grinder of “real life,” but most schools eliminate any real prep work because adults mediate every conflict, grievance, hogged sandbox, and stolen dinosaur toy..
4. Climbing is encouraged.
Kids aren't just allowed to climb trees, towering jungle gyms, and other climbing structures. They're encouraged.
5. Peripatetic lectures.
Instead of forcing kids to sit still, the teacher leads them on a walk around school grounds as they discuss topics, ask questions, teach lessons. Stopping when necessary to work quietly, write.
6. Movement breaks.
Minimum 5-10 minutes of vigorous activity for every 50 minutes of instruction. Dance, plyometrics, "go sprint around the track."
7. Give a mix of free play and structured exercise, including:
MovNat. This is @ErwanLeCorre's brainchild, and early years are the prime time to teach kids to move naturally through the environment. Balance, climbing, crawling, jumping, all of it. Their joint mobility is unencumbered by years of sitting and sedentary living (because, well, they’ve only been alive for half a decade), so MovNat will come naturally.
Strength training once a week. A lot of bodyweight basics – pullups, pushups, squats, planks, overhead presses – plus some light weighted movements, like learning how to hip hinge to pick stuff up off the ground (deadlifts, basically, not for weight, but for the movement pattern). Most kids do this naturally, but that goes away pretty quick. This basic weekly refresher course would keep it. And no, strength training does not stunt growth.
Obstacle course/agility. It's fun, effective, and kids love it. @JeremyFrisch posts great examples.
Sprints once a week. Six or seven all-out sprints with a couple minutes of rest in between. Kids love to run and this is a great outlet for it.
Mile runs every week. If you can run a mile well, you’re in pretty good shape.
Ultimate frisbee. The perfect sport for kids to learn strategy, timing, jumping, catching, throwing with enough contact.
Wrestling. Self defense is very important.
Field trips to the wilderness for long hikes. Maybe two or three times a month get kids outside for daylong hikes. Bring along the science teachers and make it educational.
A fully outfitted jungle gym with the regular stuff – swings, ladders, multiple levels, slides – and not-so-regular stuff – rings, dip bars, horizontal bars, climbing ropes available all the time for free use. Kids would learn how to climb, swing, and play on and around the equipment, maybe even with a gymnastics day every couple weeks, but there would also be free days. I’m thinking epic matches of hot lava monsters, personally.
I'll get to older grades later.
Please take 40 minutes of your time and listen to one of the most important, moving, and inspirational speeches that I have heard in my lifetime. I expect you will agree.
Alternatively, if you don’t have 40 minutes, listen for five minutes and then you will find time for the rest.
The speech begins at around minute 40.
@RobertKennedyJr addresses the health crisis in our country and its root causes and how he intends to address it. He also scolds the DNC for its anti-Democratic anti-free speech actions during the election.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a Republican, Democrat or otherwise. It is important for you to hear his words, not a short form (mis)translation by the media. We owe him as much for the work, sacrifice, and investment he has made in his campaign and in sharing his important message.
Thank you @RobertKennedyJr!
Inflation is experienced at the grocery store, but always manufactured by the government. It's the same story every time. The politicians who create it by printing money, villainize and blame companies that have nothing to do with it — to distract from their reckless spending.
Watching history play out on Twitter is such a bizarre experience
For all its faults there is no other social media network that comes close to Twitter when it’s cooking
“The U.S. federal government is on an unsustainable fiscal path. And that just means that the debt is growing faster than the economy… We're borrowing from future generations,” says Fed chief Jerome Powell. https://t.co/XYuERNNhRX
No surprise.
Meeting activity guidelines (150 min of aerobic and 2 muscle-strengthening sessions/week) associated w/ 48% ⬇️ mortality from flu/pneumonia.
Dose-response relationship between aerobic exercise and mortality risk up to 600 min/week.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau on Jalen Brunson:
"My thing is, there's no show with Jalen. He's just pure heart, and the leadership is off the charts. I mean, when you dig into the season he's had, when you talk about improving, this guy, he improved 8 points, from 16 points to 24 points. Career high in assists. Shooting more 3s, and shooting them very efficiently. When you look at improving, you're looking at why has he gotten better. It's the way he approaches the game. It's how he works. And he's not talking about it — you walk in the gym & you'll see it. You'll see it. There's no messing around with him. There's no agendas with him. Just pure heart and 'Let's Win.' And that's what I love about him.”
