Let’s talk about this Toronto Raptors 2025-2026 team for a moment. One of the most interesting teams to evaluate coming into this season. Won 30 games last year, but in reality they probably could’ve won like 34-36 slashed a lot of minutes and were trying to lose/develop guys for much of last season.

Since Darko has been hired the main goal was to shift the culture and play style

Year 1 was about implementing more ball movement (0.5 offense), changing the culture off the court

Year 2 was all about development and having guys experiment with there games. Had a super young team with 5 rookies last year. 4 of them playing key rotation minutes for you

Towards the trade deadline they made the Brandon Ingram move and he didn’t suit up for you. I’m not going to say this is a superstar by no means, but this is a fringe all star/ all star caliber guy and a lot of your half court issues will be masked because those are his strengths. He is a certified bucket getter.

Year 3 under Darko this is the first time the expectation is to win and make the playoffs. With the East being very bad to put it lightly this is a very attainable goal.

While the bench is super young I do believe they have the talent compared to a lot of second units. If summer league is also any indication they will get after the ball and give you maximum effort on the defensive side at the minimum. With the bench consisting of Jamal Shead, Gradey Dick, Ja’Kobe Walter, CMB, Mamu, Mogbo, Ochai, Battle that’s atleast 13 guys that in theory could be getting 10-15 minutes a night for you when you also add in the 5 starters.

I’m not going to anoint this bench as the second coming of the bench mob quite yet, but on paper they mesh quite well and are quite talented. Youthful full of energy, should play hard, have spacing.

Unproven at a NBA level sure, but a far cry from the measly bench Raptors fans had gotten accustomed to.

The main question headed into this year will be how do Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram and RJ Barrett gel together

To be honest with y’all I’m not worried about Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram. I think those two will work really well off of each other.

Scottie Barnes will have the ball atleast 24-26% usage most likely, same with Brandon Ingram and in there you’re going to see IQ playing off ball, but also run PNR with Jakob.

It leaves to question what is Barrett’s role in that starting lineup? He’s not a knockdown 3 point shooter, and he’s also not the best defender, but to be fair to him he was a more willing defender towards the end of last season. He is good in transition, and he puts pressure on the basket. However, he’s inefficient at the rim by the numbers.

Can he be scaled down?

He was your highest usage guy last year. People will look at the points, rebounds, assists, but that’s a huge reason as to why. The usage will not be close to that this season with BI in the mix and wanting Barnes/IQ also as ball handlers.

3 guys that absolutely should have the ball in there hands more than RJ and 3 guys this organization have committed to over the last 2 years.

So for what that starting lineup needs in theory is a better defender than RJ Barrett (Walter, Ochai, CMB)

If it’s strictly shooting (Walter, Ochai, Gradey)

Lower usage plug in guys (Walter, Ochai, Gradey, CMB)

The personnel is there on this current roster to actually make it work, but it’s on Coach Darko to stagger the minutes and or figure out if it’s best for RJ to come off the bench.

Ideally I think RJ Barrett is the perfect 6th man. Can have a higher usage there, and feast on bench units. You would need him to generate offense there and he would deliver.

I would personally start Walter because again lower usage, better shooter, better defender.
