🎥 The Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome, Italy 🇮🇹
Saint Cecilia was born in Rome around the year 200 and died around 235. She is the Patroness of Music 🎶
The present basilica was rebuilt under Pope Paschal I in the 9th century, following the transfer of Saint Cecilia's relics from the Catacombs of San Callisto in 822. The church stands on the site of the saint's former home, where she was martyred in the early 3rd century under Emperor Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander.
The basilica features a rich artistic and architectural heritage. Its façade, constructed in 1725 by Ferdinando Fuga, incorporates ancient mosaics, columns, and a cantharus (a large Roman water vessel). The interior is divided into three naves and contains significant works of art, including the 9th-century apse mosaic depicting Christ with Saints Paul, Cecilia, Paschal I, Peter, Valerian, and Agatha. The presbytery houses a Gothic ciborium from 1293, crafted by Arnolfo di Cambio, and the famous marble statue of Saint Cecilia by Stefano Maderno, completed in 1600. This statue, depicting the saint in a naturalistic pose with visible wounds from her martyrdom, was created after her incorrupt body was discovered in 1599 during renovations.
Other notable artworks include the 13th-century fresco of the Last Judgment by Pietro Cavallini, rediscovered in 1900 and located in the choir of the nuns , and the Apotheosis of Saint Cecilia fresco on the vault by Sebastiano Conca from 1727. The crypt, decorated in the cosmatesque style, contains the relics of Saint Cecilia and her husband, Saint Valerian, and features remains of an altar dedicated by Pope Gregory VII in 1080. The church also preserves the remains of a Roman house and a thermal bath complex from the 1st–2nd century AD, believed to be the site of Cecilia’s martyrdom.
One year ago today, on Monday in the Octave of Easter, Pope Francis passed away.
Today we remember his life, legacy, and faithful service to the Church. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
