idk writing a drama centred around overcoming communication barriers and then in your next breath rejecting those who don’t speak japanese because “subtitles won’t convey the exact meaning” feels incredibly close minded and contradicting to the drama’s message of inclusivity

I get that "lost in translation" is a thing but you'd be surprised at just how GOOD translators can convey the essence of things to people who don't understand the original language. You need to get out more and consume more non-Japanese media.

Or learn other languages maybe?

linguistics student here, and here's my two cents about her thoughts and approach in general:
first thing first, she's a normal bodied person with no disability. the fact she wrote a script about deaf people, different kinds of deaf people at that is wrong. >

I feel bad to a translator who worked hard to translate this drama. They're researching sign language so there are no mistranslations. 'Gatekeep' like this while everyone loves it, feels the writer also discredits the effort of translators out there

The idea that a drama with very universal themes is somehow inaccessible to non-Japanese people is absolutely ridiculous. But this kind of thinking is prevalent in the Japanese entertainment industry, which is why it hasn't been as able to globalise very successfully #Silent

last thing i’ll say but as a speaker of eng and jpn i’ve never once thought that eng speaking ppl Shouldn’t watch jpn things just because of the concern of meaning lost in translation. unfortunately it’s always going to be a risk! but translators work so hard to minimise this.
