FGO has a lot of problems, I won't hesitate to say that. Long post incoming.
Gameplay is outdated, the gacha system is one of the most unforgiving there is (though a weird part of me prefers it over hoyo gacha. I'll explain later to anyone interested) and there's no way to replay past events or story after you clear it.
However, where it shines brightest is its character writing and story.
In a lot of other Gacha, they need to sell the newest character. Even if the character starts off as an antagonist, they some how end up liking you by the end of the story chapter or event. They're also absolved of most of the bad/evil things they do because the developer doesn't want the character to be seen in a bad light.
Every new female character is either a best friend or infatuated with the MC, same goes for male characters.
In FGO, there are playable/rollable characters that:
-love you
-who are your best friend
-who are canonically married and clearly have no romantic feelings for MC
-that hate you
-that conspire against you both in events and in the main story
-saintly
-are flat out evil (have killed, not remorseful or regretful)
and more. The way FGO's system works is that the summoned character is not entirely there by choice but for a common goal.
A lot of these characters have very interesting personalities and flaws. The writing team for the English adaption do a great job at conveying them too, imo.
Some are written better than others (Jalter is best girl) but overall, it's bold to have characters in a gacha game that make no attempts to have characters that flat out do not like the MC.
I'm sure there's other gacha that do what FGO does too, but FGO's the one that does it best to me.
