I felt the same sense of betrayal when I learned the truth about the AIDS epidemic. The story I was told was that public health authorities cruelly ignored the crisis because of homophobia. In reality, they begged the gay community to stop their wildly unsafe sex practices, and the community responded by comparing them to nazis. They called people trying to save gay lives nazis because they asked them to stop having unprotected orgies.

When you build your movement on lies, you’re setting a time bomb for yourself. People don’t like being lied to, and the backlash against your lies will dwarf whatever temporary PR boost they provided.
