HUMILIATING DEFEAT OF THE DELHI SULTANATE IN THE CHAMBAL REGION — (c. 1388 CE)
Following the defeat of Sultan Muhammad bin Firoz Shah near Agra in c. 1388 CE, the Rajput Confederation of the Chambal region - led primarily by the Chauhans, Tomars, and Bhadaurias, with the support of the Kachhwahas and Sengars - raised the banner of revolt from Akhal (Tughluqpur) and Etawah. Under the leadership of Uddharan and Sumer, they assembled a formidable confederate army near Masalpur.
Malikzadah Mahmud marched against the confederates, sacked Masalpur, and began retreating with enormous booty. The Rajputs pursued the withdrawing Sultanate army and inflicted what the Persian chronicler himself describes as a "crushing defeat." Several prominent maliks and nobles of the Delhi Sultanate were slain, forcing Malikzadah Mahmud to flee to Munj.
The setback was so catastrophic that Delhi rushed reinforcements under Musnad-i-Ali Junaid Khan and other distinguished nobles to salvage the collapsing frontier. Yet even after their arrival, the chronicler admits that "the army of Islam had been decisively defeated," while the Rajputs "established their hold effectively."
The consequences were far-reaching. The Delhi Sultanate rapidly lost control over a chain of strategically important towns, including Chandwar(Firozabad), Bhongaon (Mainpuri) , Phaphund, Bairichh, Mahoni (Bhind), and Ratwa (Bhind), all of which passed into Rajput hands. Sultanate authority in the region effectively collapsed.
As Rajput supremacy continued to expand, Nizam Khan, the brother of Malikzadah Mahmud, was ultimately compelled to evacuate and surrender the strategically important fort of Akhal (Tughluqpur), abandoning the frontier and joining the retreating Sultanate forces.
Perhaps the most striking admission comes from the chronicler himself, who laments that "the supremacy of the infidels crossed all limits." Far from being a mere battlefield success, this campaign marked the collapse of Delhi Sultanate authority across much of the Chambal frontier and the establishment of effective Rajput political dominance over the region.

On this day in 1966, a vision forged in battle became a legacy.
After leading the legendary Megh Force to extraordinary success in the 1965 war, Col. Megh Singh transformed that battlefield experience into India's first dedicated commando battalion, raising 9 Para on 1 July 1966.
Built on the courage and combat experience of the men of Megh Force, the unit went on to become 9 Para (Special Forces), one of India's most elite special operations units, carrying forward the ethos of audacity, initiative, and uncompromising professionalism that Col Megh Singh Rathore embodied.
On the Raising Day of 9 Para (SF), we remember the founder who laid its foundations and salute every warrior who has upheld its legacy.
