Simon Ekpa’s BRGIE Actions in Parallels with Finland’s Historical Resistance Against Russian Occupation

On May 6, 2025, the Finnish Central Criminal Police (KRP) concluded a preliminary investigation into Simon Ekpa, a Biafrian-born Finnish citizen and the elected Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE).

The unconfirmed charges stem from his leadership in the Biafran independence movement, which seeks to reestablish Biafra as a sovereign state in southeastern Nigeria, a region historically oppressed since the non consensual Nigerian Amalgamation by the British.

Ekpa’s actions, including the formation of the Biafra Defense Forces and a 30-day lockdown of Nigerian government institutions in 2024, are seen as protective measures against violence and oppression by Nigerian forces.

Ekpa’s BRGIE’s actions are similar in context with Finland’s historical resistance against Russian occupation, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Finland fought for autonomy and eventual independence.

By drawing parallels between Ekpa’s defensive strategies and Finland’s historical efforts to disarm Russian security outfits during its struggle for self-determination, one can only see and support Ekpa’s actions as a legitimate exercise of a people’s right to protect themselves against systemic oppression.

Ekpa’s actions are rooted in a historical context of systemic violence against the Igbo people, and Sahara Reporters highlight the Nigerian army’s complicity in violence, including supplying arms to bandits and enforcing oppressive levies, which have exacerbated insecurity in the region. Ekpa’s defensive measures, therefore, can be seen as a response to a state-backed aggression that has persisted since Nigeria’s amalgamation in 1914.

Finland’s Historical Resistance Against Russian Occupation

Finland’s struggle for autonomy and independence from Russian control provides a historical parallel to Ekpa’s actions. From 1809 to 1917, Finland was a Grand Duchy under the Russian Empire, but growing Russification policies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries threatened Finnish autonomy. During this period, Finns employed various strategies to resist Russian oppression and protect their right to self-determination, including efforts to disarm or counteract Russian security forces occupying Finnish territory.

1. Resistance to Russification and Military Control (1899–1917): The “First Period of Oppression” (1899–1905) saw Russia impose military and administrative control over Finland, prompting Finnish politicians to draw up plans for disengagement or full sovereignty. Finnish resistance included mass meetings, local strikes, and a general strike in 1917, which supported the Finnish state’s power struggle and demanded increased autonomy. These actions disrupted Russian administrative control, much like Ekpa’s lockdown disrupted Nigerian government operations in Biafra.

2. Disarming Russian Security Outfits During the Finnish Civil War (1918): Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, Finland declared independence, but the presence of Russian troops and security outfits posed a threat to Finnish sovereignty. During the Finnish Civil War (1918), both the White and Red factions sought to disarm Russian forces remaining in Finland. The White forces, backed by Germany, successfully expelled or neutralized Russian troops, ensuring that Finland could establish itself as an independent state free from foreign military occupation. This act of disarming a foreign oppressor parallels Ekpa’s creation of the Biafra Defense Forces to protect Biafran communities from Nigerian military incursions.
